Say No to Overpriced Gimmicks: A Home Beauty Device Buying Guide

Get the Best Value Without Wasting Money

One of the most popular topics among girls around me is, besides weight loss and fitness, how to care for skin and fight aging!

Nowadays, people are under huge work pressure, often stay up late, and have unhealthy living habits, all of which accelerate skin aging. Some may say, fighting aging is easy—just buy several anti-aging skincare products and stick to a diligent routine. In fact, each type of skin aging issue has a targeted solution; simply following skincare trends blindly is not enough.

Take fine lines as an example: they are tiny wrinkles caused by dry skin and initial aging, which can be improved to some extent with basic skincare.

However, deep wrinkles that are hard to cover even with makeup call for proper medical aesthetic treatments or beauty devices as better solutions. Throwing money blindly at various anti-aging serums often results in wasted cost with little to no effect. Yet both medical aesthetics and beauty devices require consistency, and the long-term expense of professional clinic treatments is unaffordable for most people. That’s why an at-home beauty device has become the go-to choice for ordinary consumers to fight aging!

Do beauty devices really work? Are they just a scam?

The answer is: they do work. Medically proven effective technologies include radio frequency (RF), high-frequency lifting, and LED beauty devices. Still, don’t place all your hopes on beauty devices alone—healthy skin is the result of comprehensive care.

With careful research and the right product choice, plus patient and consistent use, beauty devices can even achieve a 1+1>2 effect.

Currently, the technology proven to effectively stimulate collagen regeneration, reduce wrinkles, and firm skin in beauty devices is RF radio frequency. To avoid being misled by low-quality products, keep these two key points in mind when purchasing:

  1. Check the parameters: For wrinkle reduction and firming, choose devices with RF; higher RF frequency delivers better results.
  2. Look for certifications: Only products with third-party human efficacy test reports are reliable.

What Types of Beauty Devices Are There? Which Works Best?

Below is an introduction to common types of beauty devices, explaining their working principles and effects. I’ve categorized them into four main types:

1. Microcurrent

Acts on the muscle layer. It uses weak electric current to stimulate muscles and the lymphatic system, tightening muscles for a “passive exercise” effect, reducing puffiness and lifting/firming the skin.

Note: Do not use on the forehead or eye area.

The principle of microcurrent is similar to fitness—tightening muscles through stimulation. It usually requires a gel-based conductive product; users may feel a slight tingling sensation. Visible results appear quickly in the short term, and long-term consistent use maintains effects longer.

2. RF Radio Frequency

Works by emitting high-energy electromagnetic waves to create thermal effects and “heat the skin”. This stimulates fibroblasts in the dermis, making them react as if injured, triggering instant contraction and realigning them into a spiral structure. As a result, sagging skin is tightened.

At the same time, the dermis produces more collagen fibers, increasing its thickness and density, which “plumps up” the skin for a firmer, fuller, and more elastic texture.

3. Plasma

Uses the attraction of ions and electrodes to enhance the penetration of skincare ingredients. In import mode, it boosts skin absorption of nutrients; in export mode, it improves cleansing by removing dirt and impurities.

Effects are not immediate or highly dramatic. Its main functions are moisturizing, deep cleansing, and enhancing skincare absorption. It is relatively safe with few side effects.

4. LED

Mostly uses red and blue light wavelengths to target specific skin concerns with phototherapy.

  • Red light: Boosts circulation, revitalizes skin, supports repair and anti-aging, and helps lighten spots.
  • Blue light: Reduces inflammation, soothes and stabilizes skin, making it ideal for acne-prone skin.

LED devices are the easiest to use—simply sit and expose skin to the light. Since results are not instant, many users abandon them after a few tries. In reality, consistent use significantly improves skin texture and radiance.

Choose the Right Beauty Device by Understanding Your Skin Type & Goals

  • Frequent makeup with incomplete cleansing, frequent blackheads and acne
  • Dry, dehydrated skin causing fine lines and patchy makeup
  • Poor absorption of skincare products
  • Dark circles and facial puffiness
  • Sagging and fine lines such as nasolabial folds, crow’s feet, and neck lines
  • Rough, dull, or sallow skin
  • For facial sagging and poor blood circulation: Choose lifting and firming devices, such as microcurrent types.
  • For oily and acne-prone skin: Select ion export devices for deep cleansing.
  • For large pores: Use devices with LED red light and cold compression functions.
  • For early anti-aging (nasolabial folds, crow’s feet, dull skin, dark spots): LED light therapy and ultrasound devices are suitable.
  • Sensitive skin: Avoid RF radio frequency devices and physical massage-type beauty tools.

Each type of at-home beauty device has its own focus and caters to different skincare needs. Without visiting professional clinics, you can easily enjoy refined at-home skincare care, making your routine more convenient and ritualistic. Bring your personal beautician home and keep your skin in its best condition always.
